Who Knew!?

Betty has been my kitchen partner for going on 55 years now. Her book was a wedding gift, and it has almost brought me up to the level of an "average" cook. Another 55 years and I might make it to a B+.

Torn, tattered and food~stained, it has weathered the years just about as well as I have!

As a young bride, I judiciously clipped and saved those boxtop coupons until I had enough to purchase the twin star patterned flatware I use to this day.

My son's favorite recipe is "Swedish Meatballs", and I have made them especially for him, on his birthdays, over the last several years. Always trying to rib me about my cooking, hubby thought it was funny to emphasize the "2" in two cups of water 'cause the last time I made this, I accidentally put in four. Turned out just fine anyway so ha ha!

So . . . you can imagine my surprise when Dean came home with this sack o' potatoes. Who knew Betty was pickin' taters now.

little things mean a lot

My folks were not at all sentimental about "things". And so I felt lucky to get a few family treasures such as a thimble from Mom's collection with her birth month and flower on it.

Mom also had a small collection of perfume vials. This one is encrusted with a silver patterned overlay and a grungy old tassel. The gold ring is a mystery. Its too large for a woman's ring finger but too small for a man's. I haven't a clue who it belonged to but I found it in Mom's dresser drawer.

This adorable card with two little buttons on it came from her old button box. I did retrieve several other buttons. I guess we did have a few things in common!

I made this tiny yo~yo quilt several years ago. Each yo is about the size of a dime. The lustreware sugar bowl was a thrift store find. Just liked the colors

My pride and joy grandchildren's grade school pictures. The boys are all grown and on their own now and my granddaughter is gone but not forgotten.

We all met our grandson Talon at the airport yesterday when he came in from Korea on leave. Sadly his Daddy Derek couldn't get the time off to join us. Pictured here are hubby Dean and me plus lots of Talon's Spokane area family. He's hugging his two sisters in one photo and his little brother Elisha is in another. So dang happy to see that sweet boy and wish he could stay longer. But he moves on to Fort Hood in a couple weeks and then off to Afghanistan.

We moved on from there to Rocky Rococo's in downtown Spokane for pizza

After an embarrassing long hug, I couldn't let go so he walked me all the way to baggage claim holding my hand. Four years is way too long between visits.

Native Art at its Finest

While planning an upcoming cruise, it put me in mind of my first and only cruise some time back. I was fortunate to be able to spend time in Alaska in awe of all the sights during one wonderful June week. The highlight of my trip was a day hiking in the Sitka National Forest . . . a rainforest with many totems that had been rescued and moved along a natural pathway.

Wanted to share these few native sculptures with you. If you are ever lucky enough to visit Alaska, this is a must see.

A farmgirl friend turned me on to a new (new to me) craft that is being swapped all over the internet. Here is my first attempt at an ATC (Artist Trading Card). I guarantee you it won't be the last time I create one of these tiny, 2.5 in x 3.5 in, pieces of art.

They give your creative juices a chance to salivate! Pile on anything and everything in your stash . . . go wild . . . take license . . . be brave . . . just do it and you'll find a whole new side of you.

treasures from the sea

My wonderful daughter, knowing me as she does, gifted me with a beautiful tablet of special papers and some diecut figures for Christmas. This paper especially called to me and seemed to work out well for an "under the sea" panorama.

I gave the fish some paint, extra sparkles and he seemed to float along the paper. Tiny seashells added some extra texture!

I used a real seahorse and sand dollar from my shelling years ago in Mexico. I knew I saved this stuff for something!!

I left the inside of these note cards blank. A day will come when they will be sent to a special someone with a special message

I have learned to live with my straight thick hair . . . now salt and pepper, but once dark brown bordering on black. However I always wished for curly hair or at least some waves!!

Don't get me wrong. There were times my hair was curly. This would happen every time my mother gave me a Toni Home Permanent!

Check out the bee stung lips. Thankfully this was not fashionable as I was growing up so I never lusted for that particular beauty treatment.

Times have certainly changed over the years in what is considered a beautiful face as the picture above emphasizes. Makeup was simple in the 1920s: pale powder and cream rouge circles on the cheeks; brows plucked and penciled in thin arches; lips painted brilliantly red, emphasizing the Cupid’s bow of the upper lip, and de-emphasizing the width of the lower lip, creating a rosebud pout.

More dragons

Usually when you see "Made in China" on products here in the U.S.A., you feel they are probably of a poorer quality. Rummaging in my closet, I found more examples of dragons from a Writing~Brush Factory in China. This little set has two brushes, an ink tray, a fu dog stamp, red ink in a little porcelain covered bowl and a stand to hold your brushes. It is encased in a beautiful silk box and has an interesting ivory closure.

This is quality Chinese manufacture and not made as a souvenir for export.

Coincidentally, I'm reading "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" right now. It wasn't planned . . . just worked out that way.

Year of the Dragon

Chinese New Year (also called the Lunar New Year) occurs in the early months of our calendar year, typically January or February and this year falls on January 23rd. This is the first of 15 days of celebration and the start of the Year of the Dragon.

I've always been drawn to the dragon in art, fabric, scrimshaw and figurines and, when I looked around me, there were several examples right here at home.

Last weekend while thrifting with my buds, I found these nice brass Chinese coins featuring debossed dragons. Just had to have them

Last summer on the way back from Mary Jane's Tea party, we stopped at a yard sale and found this lovely tapestry fabric

Just two days ago, a good friend of mine sent this beautiful stamp from Canada. It's gilted with deep rich Chinese colors. Thank you Pam for sending me the latest artsy postage stamp from your country. They are always a treasure.

and doesn't take any artistic ability. Trust me! All you need is rubber cement, some watercolor paper (I like a rough texture for this project), watercolor paints (a child's box if nothing else) and a nice wide brush to lay on washes. Oh yeah . . . and water!

Dribble some rubber cement liberally across your watercolor paper. It will take on its own shape so you don't really have to think of "design".

Let it dry. This will take quite awhile unless you apply a heating gun to it.

Once dry, spread a wash of color over it. I like a very wet brush with quick strokes using a mix of colors that blend together.

Allow it to dry thoroughly and then rub off the rubber cement using your fingertip or a pickup eraser (usually made from a conglomeration of rubber cement bits.

Since I've done this on a large sheet of watercolor paper, I can isolate the sections that appeal to me:

You can crop and trim it there or go one step further. Another splash of rubber cement and, again, let dry completely

and another wash of color over the whole piece

Let dry, rub off and voila!

What can I say about this man? He was the most giving, generous, patient and mild~mannered person I've ever met. He loved me unconditionally, gave of his undivided time whenever I needed him. Demanded nothing of me and was the best father a girl could ever have. He left this world too early and I miss him terribly.

New Year . . . New Friends

One of the highlights of 2011 was making a new friend. Many old friends I have ~ some going back over 40 and 50 years. But at my age, new friends are hard to come by.

I was happy to find that Audrey's birthday is the day before mine so I thought it only appropriate (and because I'm always looking for an excuse to craft with paper) to create a card for her. Voila!

May I hold dear the friends I have now and find new ones in 2012.

I wish the same for all of my blogger friends as well.

Still No Snow

Trees are beginning to bud out, we've had several days of 40 degrees or better (yesterday reached 50!) and we haven't had but a skiff of snow all winter. I know, I know I'm tempting the fates by even mentioning this great mild weather. Can you tell I'd rather be able to drive on bare streets than ski?

Great Grandma's Brilliant Cut Glass

Another gem from the past are these lovely bowls that belonged to Dean's great grandmother. We used them this year during our Christmas celebration as candy and nut dishes. The gold is partially worn off the larger bowl but most of the red flashing is retained on the smaller odd~shaped dish. Only wish my photos could do justice to the intricacy of the cuts.

"While cut glass has been produced for thousands of years, it reached a peak of popularity during the late 19th century in the so-called "Brilliant" period, which lasted until the early 1900s. Brilliant period cut glass, a popular wedding gift at the time, was heavy leaded glass, intricately cut with geometric patterns and prisms.

Cut glass became desirable because it reflected the light across the dinner table. During the American Brilliant period, it was referred to as "rich cut glass." It was very expensive and showed the social standing of the owners."

I had no idea I married into a family with "social standing"!

Christmas Nostalgia

This year we trotted out some oldies but goodies passed down from our families.

These delicate Christmas balls have been moved from home to home and been languishing in my closet for years. We used them as a table centerpiece this year . . .

In an old divided box made for them, the price from Macy's just 59 cents. Sadly the most beautiful ball didn't survive all the moves, broke in a million pieces but I just can't throw it away.

We started collecting old greeting cards years ago when you could find them in thrift stores. Here are just a few . . .

A Rockwell Christmas

1894-1978, American illustrator, b. New York City. An enormously popular illustrator, Rockwell specialized in warm and humorous scenes of everyday small-town life. The cover of The Saturday Evening Post was his showcase for over forty years, giving him an audience larger than that of any other artist in history. Over the years he depicted there a unique collection of Americana, a series of vignettes of remarkable warmth and humor.

You just can't beat this American gem for down~home illustrations. Always been one of my favorites since I was a little girl and my Grandma turned me loose with scissors and all her past subscriptions of Saturday Evening posts! It kept me quiet for hours and allowed me to gain a deep appreciation for art.

My live~in artist designed these cards, I cut all the little bitty pieces of fabric (not complaining!) and fused them to the paper. We both had a hand in finishing but its my job to sign and mail.

Yesterday was crafting day with my dear friend Karen. We worked on our Mary Jane mail art for December and, of course, our theme was Christmas. Karen picked up some wooden cutouts so that we could make ornaments. It was fun decoupaging small pieces of old sheet music on them and then glitzing 'em up.

The star is removable as well as the figure of the little girl with angel wings. They can be used as tags or ornaments.

I added two little gifts to make this a special mailing.

finally brought to life after 80 years

This finished quilt was a collaborative effort by at least four seamstresses: the woman who created this wonderful quilt top way back in the first third of the last century; my friend Karen who helped me choose a modern~day border fabric that wouldn't take away from the vintage look; a machine quilter from Idaho who did a great job adding backing and batting and flourishes (thanks Gloria) and finally my contribution. I stitched the borders on, then after it was quilted, turned the muslin back over the edge and handstitched it as a small extra border. Just thought it needed a little jazzing up so I added yo~yos to the center of the Dresden plates.

Its an extra large double bed quilt so cheery. I love how it turned out

Some research leads me to believe this quilt top (found buried in a basement drawer at an estate sale) must have been sewn up in the 1920s or 30s

The colors and patterns are not exactly the same as found in this fabric dating book, but very close to the samples therein

Finished the second crazy quilt wallhanging for my daughter yesterday. She will be gifting it to one of Shauna's best friends for Christmas.

You would have to have known my granddaughter to understand these t~shirt colors, stripes and especially the significance of the mac and cheese.

This sweet girl was eclectic in her wardrobe choices, a total artist in the way she put colors and textures together. She always lived in her own little world of wonderment and joy.

I have not posted here for days. But I have an excuse . . . the worst head cold I've had in a decade really took me down for over a week. Then, computer problems and a fix that took days with an online tech to the tune of $199.99 (or in other words $200!).

The cold lingers tho I feel much better and am itching to get to my craft studio. Lots of sewing projects to get to including an old quilt to finish. I had it machine quilted and, to jazz it up and give it my own spin, I'm adding yo~yos along with turning up the edge from the back and hand~sewing.

Tomorrow I'll add a photo or two of the latest crazy quilt wall hanging that's ready for some embellishing today. One more gift for my granddaughter's girlfriend to be presented by my daughter Kim. Sew many projects, so little time!

Benjamin Franklin disliked the choice of the bald eagle as the national bird, and it was in a letter to his daughter, in 1784, that he proposed putting the turkey in its place. The eagle, Franklin points out, is “a bird of bad moral character. He does not get his living honestly. . . . He watches the labor of the fishing hawk; and when that diligent bird has at length taken a fish, and is bearing it to his nest for the support of his mate and young ones, the bald eagle pursues him, and takes it from him.” Truly, a one-per-cent kind of bird*. The turkey, however, represented to Franklin the best of bourgeois Philadelphia values. Snow has covered my little world here in the Pacific Northwest. The birds are voracious and flocking to our back yard. Quail (my personal favs) come several times a day to our feeder and then make for the cover of the cyprus which completely hides them until hunger brings them out once again. The resident woodpecker perches in our neighbor's tallest tree and watches the finches, chickadees, juncoes and occasional nuthatch raid our feeders. Every now and then, he gets brave enough and checks to see what is offered up for food.

We watch the chickadees dash for the suet cake which is hanging from a tree along the fence. In and out lickety split to take his little treasure off to a hiding place so that he can eat in peace!

Hoping to get a better look at these speedy birds, we have hung a suet cage outside the kitchen window and filled it with "homemade" goodies. I found this recipe in a recent Birds & Blooms magazine:

2 cups quick oats
2 cups cornmeal
1 cup flour
1/2 cup sugar
1 cup solid shortening
1 cup peanut butter

Mix dry ingredients in a large bowl. Melt shortening in the microwave and then add the peanut butter, stirring until blended. Pour this over the dry ingredients and mix well. Pat into a 13 x 9 in. pan lined with plastic wrap, and refrigerate for a few hours. Lift out and slice (a pizza cutter works well) into pieces that will fit in your suet feeder.
(I threw in a handful of dried cranberries just because I could!)

In a few days, I will let you know if it brings any of our winged friends in close enough to get a photo. It usually takes that long for them to discover new feeding stations and get up the courage to investigate.

things aren't always what they seem

Recently, with a visit by a family member, I was told that what I thought had happened tragically, almost 50 years ago, was probably not at all how I envisioned it unfolding. When one doesn't know the facts, one tends to create their own version of what may have happened, and it eventually becomes the truth and an explanation how such a thing could occur.

All these years my belief in how my sister died has been deeply entrenched in my mind. Now, after talking to someone who was close to her, all my imaginings of the leadup to her death have been obliterated, and I have a new truth. I'm not sure I was ready to hear this. My own truth was buried long ago along with my only sister, and it shook my world to hear a new and different explanation.

If you truly want to be enlightened, I urge you to talk with others regarding your family history. They could certainly shed new light on their version of something no one has spoken of for years. But . . . be ready for whatever comes forth. Decide how much pain it may bring you. Perhaps you are better off with your own story if it gives you some peace.

With the changing weather (and not for the good), I found myself squirreled away in my studio the last few days fusing and cutting out intricate little pieces of fabric. It's that time again . . . designing my Christmas cards.

Got me thinking about all the seamstresses of the past. They are my sisters of the cloth so to speak! Women have been finding themselves creatively by stitching for centuries. It can be great therapy and, when you've finished a sewing project there is such pride in accomplishment.

faded to perfection

Two pieces of a quilt top which, if sewn together would fit a double~size bed, have been in my possession for years. They contain bands of tiny squares, sewn on point, from the 1920s or 30s.

Pieces are all hand sewn with the tiniest of stitches and such small seams making it almost impossible to put the two pieces together into one complete quilt . . . I'm afraid the seams would pop under the pressure of batting, backing and quilting.

So I'm asking you, dear followers, for any ideas that would bring this lovely piece out of my closet to display in my home.

yo yo mania

I was so proud of myself several years ago when I put together this little yo~yo mini~quilt. Each yo is smaller than a dime and took what seemed like forever to get finished.

Since then, the yo~yo craze has hit fever pitch and these crazy little circular pouches are being used for all kinds of decorating and adornment

As in the 20s and 30s, there are still seamstresses making complete quilts from their simple little yo~yos

I'm thinkin', if I work all winter, I may come up with something like this next Spring:

The kitchen has never been my most creative room in the house. In fact, everything I've learned about cooking came from my mother. Her culinary arts came from her mother, and none of us found inspiration from recipes, spices and herbs.

If memory serves, when I was just 20 years old and newly married after a dinner at Grandma Laura's, she mentioned that she thought "no one should have to still cook meals after the age of 60". Mom then remarked that "no one should have to cook after the age of 40" and, of course, I chimed in "no one should have to cook after the age of 20"!

Having related that bit of family history . . . in hopes of diverting attention from the food on my dinner guest's plates, I have done my best to set a beautiful table with my new dishes and placemats I freshly created in my more productive room . . . my craft studio.

Its always nice to receive flowers, but its especially nice when they are unexpected and brought with a big smile from a good friend. Dawn brought me this lovely bright bunch yesterday.

You saw the t~shirt scraps last month. Here is the finished product all sewn together, embellished with rick rack, trim, jewels and a transferred picture of Shauna and her good friend Krystal. I wasn't sure if I'd like all those wild colors together, but it turned out not so bad and really says Shauna . . . my sweet quirky granddaughter! Miss her so very much.

After three summers of growing, Shauna's Eastern Redbud is finally beginning to look like a full~fledged tree

I see her in each heart~shaped leaf and feel her presence at the sight of this little memorial to her short life.

This sign has faded somewhat but the memory of Shauna never will.

October Mail Art & Tutorial

Another month, another mail art swap at Mary Jane's Swap Forum. Here is my offering for October.

I made a watercolor leaf impression, added a Hallmark pin, a quote and let the papers do the work for me!

Leaf impressions are so simple and fun to do. First you pick a leaf shape that you like. I know you can find a leaf laying around somewhere.

Best if it isn't so dry that it would be brittle when pressed down. I picked these redbud leaves (which were turning yellow) right from the tree

Then I got out my paints ... you absolutely do not need artist grade watercolors. A child's pallette will work just fine.

Daub on the paint. Don't forget the stem! Again any old brush will do. The more colors you use the better . . . just make sure it isn't too wet. You'll get the feel of it after you make one or two impressions.

Flip it over onto your selected paper and press every area. I find it helpful to lay a piece of paper over the leaf (in other words sandwich the leaf between your "chosen" paper and any other paper) and rubbing it good to wring out every bit of detail possible.

This impression was taken from a leaf I had in my flower press. It took a few attempts before the paint stuck very well but I think it was well worth it.

Dontcha just feel like this some days? It's one of those days (weeks) for me. I can relate to my Mom's childhood teddy bear although I don't need to replace my eyebrows or a foot. But I have a problem with my ear and trying to hold my head up.

I've never before planted a true blue flower! This delphinium was given to me as an itty bitty starter and grew so quickly that I had to hold it up with a tomato cage.

Each day a few more flowers pop up on this stock. Hope the weather holds long enough for each and every bud to open.

So happy this is a perrenial. Next year she's going to have siblings for sure!

Thank you Dawn for this lovely addition to my garden. I think of you and your generosity each time I see her.

Harvest Time

I'm always bragging about the beautiful mountains that surround our valley, the lakes within driving distance and the four seasons here . . . mostly mild summer and winter.

But I rarely pontificate on the rolling fields of grain in Eastern Washington . . . some of those right in my neighborhood. Hay baling seems to be finished for the year as rains and cooler weather have set in, but I have seen farmers and ranchers trying to eke out one more crop. And it could happen if the weather turns warm once again.

I always seem to equate the change of seasons with the beauty of art. The old masters are still my first choice.

This wild plant has followed me from my beginnings in northern Minnesota, through my moves over the years all the way to eastern Washington and the panhandle of Idaho. It speaks to me each Fall in hikes through the fields and woods and has become a part of this season along with changing colors, falling leaves and cooler weather.

I'm just starting to make small~size memory crazy quilts to honor my sweet granddaughter who passed away at the age of 16 some three~and~a~half years ago. She was a bit flamboyant in her dress and in her demeanor and these scraps from her t~shirts reflect that . . .

Being all knits, I had to figure a way to stabilize and sew on them, so . . . I've backed them all up with fusible Pellon. Seems to be working pretty well, stretching has been minimized somewhat.

Right now I'm waiting for my daughter to come up with some large clear pictures of Shauna to make transfers onto fabric and add them to the crazy quilts.

Stay tuned. Lots of glitz, rickrack, fancy stitching and all my heart will be added before its done!

Can't stay away from those Mary Jane Farmgirl swaps. This is my contribution for the first "Block of the Month" October quilt block.

Each month for the next year, members will each swap one 12" block. By the end of one year, we will have enough blocks to put together into a quilt.

With a different theme monthly, the resulting quilt should be quite eclectic and interesting.

Our devious little plan to draw the chickadees produced great results. Yesterday afternoon there were 5 of them checking out the sunflowers, grabbing a seed and flying to a perch with it. Chickadees, being who they are and not wasting time in one place long, were too fast for me to capture on my camera. These images were "borrowed" from Google Search ... one of my all~time favorite places to find images.

To make it easier for the birds to find it and to make it easier for us to see the birds that find it, Dean pulled up the sunflowers and "transplanted" them in our raised bed. They look rather alien standing up like that but they will be thoroughly enjoyed by the goldfinch, chickadees and possibly the downy woodpecker.

Peppers have been producing well lately. Can't wait for the weather to cool so I can turn the stove on to stuff and bake them.

The rocks are there to absorb heat.

Nights get down into the 40s & 50s

As the sun was going down, we jumped (well, carefully climbed) into the paddleboat and took a tour of the lake, snapped some photos of the colors it cast on the water and shoreline.

After several games of Rummikub with my travelling companion, confidante and precious friend Karen, we enjoyed a peaceful and comfy night at my friend Judy's wonderful accomodations overlooking Kelso Lake (at the other end of my less comfy piece of lake frontage which happens to be electric and running~water free).

Coffee around the campfire under the morning's sunrise . . .

and then a short drive to my end of the lake for a tough hike up the hill. It was so overgrown that we lost the trail a few times and ended up here . . .

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about kisses and why they never cease to thrill, excite and make you feel as if you are the most important person in someone else’s life at that moment. When did people begin to even think of pressing lips together in an act of romantic love? Was it as spontaneous as a lightning strike? Was it thought out and tested before it was perfected? And, why oh why, am I ruminating on it at this time in my life?

It may be because I find myself in the fortunate position of being kissed often ... morning kisses, kisses at night and several times during the day for absolutely no reason at all!

Here are a few pictures from a 1933 magazine called "The Household" which was published the month and year that my hubby and distributor of kisses was born:

I was told butterfly bushes drew the butterflies to your yard (who knew!!) and today was proof positive. Here is only one of the flutter bys I watched enjoy my new bush.

Variegated Fritillary (Euptoieta claudia)

The Variegated Fritillary is a shapely butterfly that has somewhat scalloped edges and wavy black lines on the upper side of its orange wings. The undersides of its wings are tan and brown, making it resemble a dead leaf. There are no shiny spots like other fritillary butterflies. The caterpillar of this unique butterfly is a sleek orange with white spots and black, branched spines. The chrysalis is a wondrous pearl color, sometimes with brown spots, and shiny gold spikes. Can't take credit for this writing but wanted to share it with my "older" friends and give hope to my "younger" friends:

As I've aged, I've become kinder to myself, and less critical of myself. I've become my own friend..

I have seen too many dear friends leave this world too soon; before they understood the great freedom that comes with aging.

Whose business is it if I choose to read or play on the computer until 4 a.m. or sleep until noon? I will dance with myself to those wonderful tunes of the 60 &70's, and if I, at the same time, wish to weep over a lost love … I will.

I will walk the beach in a swim suit that is stretched over a bulging body, and will dive into the waves with abandon if I choose to, despite the pitying glances from the jet set. They, too, will get old.
I know I am sometimes forgetful. But there again, some of life is just as well forgotten. And I eventually remember the important things.

Sure, over the years my heart has been broken. How can your heart not break when you lose a loved one, or when a child suffers, or even when somebody's beloved pet gets hit by a car? But broken hearts are what give us strength and understanding and compassion. A heart never broken is pristine and sterile and will never know the joy of being imperfect.

I am so blessed to have lived long enough to have my hair turning gray, and to have my youthful laughs be forever etched into deep grooves on my face. So many have never laughed, and so many have died before their hair could turn silver.
As you get older, it is easier to be positive. You care less about what other people think. I don't question myself anymore... I've even earned the right to be wrong.

So, to answer your question, I like being old. It has set me free. I like the person I have become. I am not going to live forever, but while I am still here, I will not waste time lamenting what could have been, or worrying about what will be. And I shall eat dessert every single day (if I feel like it).

Audrey's Li'l Bit o' Heaven

High in the hills off of Bigelow Gulch Road lies a beautiful home surrounded by flowers, bushes and vignettes. I was welcomed there today by my friend Audrey who tends to her gardens and knows the names of each and every plant. It was educational and a treat for the eye. If I went back tomorrow, I would have another whole set of pictures so this is just a small sample . . .

She apologized for these "spent" flowers but reasoned that, because the hummingbirds were still using them, she couldn't bear to dead head the blossoms.

How inviting is this little private bistro . . . cool, quiet and restful

All this plus a lot of laughs and a wonderful lunch and visit with a pair of sweet women.

one day and one night at the lake

I just spent a day and night at the wonderful peaceful North Idaho Lake Kelso with a good friend. Its a small quiet lake dotted during the day with only one or two fishing boats with trolling motors attached. Maybe a kayak now and then. Heron, eagle and osprey fish there as well. My favorite summertime place to be.

Left without our favorite corkscrews, we searched the cupboards and the trunk of my car to come up with two. Neither one of them could we make work. Really we were only going to dip into one bottle, but when that one refused to cooperate, we tried another. You can see the results. By that time, we were so desperate we cut the cork down in increments until we reached the good stuff!

My dear mother~in~law loved mustache cups . . . the more ornate the better. She passed several years ago and the cups have been stored in a Minnesota basement for all this time. My brother~in~law decided we really should have the ones with our names written on the bottom of the cups as most of them were our gifts to her back in the '70s and '80s. Thanks Myles! Sadly five of them didn't survive the UPS trip. Two were completely broken and three had some chips and other broken areas.

This post is directed to my sweltering friends back east ... especially those in Virginia, Ontario, Ohio and Minnesota . . .

In 1905, eleven-year-old Frank Epperson from San Francisco, California invented the popular hot weather treat, the Popsicle as we know it today. The invention came about as a pure accident. One cold evening Frank left a mixture of powder flavored soda water with a stir stick in it on the porch. Because of the cold weather outside, he awoke to a frozen treat on a stick.

Seventeen years later, in 1922, Epperson served his ice lollipops at a Fireman’s ball and they were a huge hit. It didn’t take long for Epperson to realize the commercial possibilities of his accidental invention. A year later, in 1923, he introduced the frozen pop on a stick to the public at Neptune Beach, an amusement park in Alameda, California. It was a huge hit. He soon after applied and received a patent for a “frozen confectionery”, in 1924, which he named the “Epsicle Ice Pop”. He began producing it in different fruit flavors on birch wood sticks. The name Popsicle appeared because Epperson’s kids called it ‘Pop’s cycles’. So, on their insistence, he renamed it “Popsicle”, which has stuck for nearly a century.

High Water

The Spokane River is busting its banks and this year is the highest I can remember. Luckily we live on high ground but here and there along the banks, it is flooding. Pictures taken yesterday. This may be the peak as there is little snow left on the mountains and, hopefully, the almost constant rain this Spring is coming to an end.

There are two paths along the river here in Newman Lake, WA ... one upper and one lower. Both paths are covered with fast running water!

Pickin's for driftwood and water~worn boards should be excellent this year once the river goes down to its normal levels

bittersweet remembrances

The end of May and Memorial Day are always a time of great sadness for me.

My little sister was born at that time in 1943 and lived to marry and bear two children before her death at 21 years of age. Coincidentally one of her daughters was born on her birthday ... May 28th ... and is alive and well with a family of her own today.

My sweet granddaughter's birthday was May 29th. She brought so much joy to our family for the 16 years of her life and left only sweet memories behind. It is still painful to remember how pointless was her death.

Memorial Day always brings memories of my Dad who served in World War 11 and the sacrifice it brought to our family at the time. He was a wonderful nurturing parent ... always there with a helping hand and a kind word. He passed away May 30th, 1991.

Family for me is everything. I will forever remember and revere each one who has gone before me. Candy, Shauna and Daddy ... I miss you every day.

Saxifraga

Here is a clump of tiny flowers ... each one no more than 5/8 inches across ... that is probably not familiar to the average gardener. It is a perennial with the most delicate and prolific blossoms and is called saxifraga.

Mine is blooming right now despite our cold wet Spring.

It spreads very slowly and takes little care which, if you knew what kind of gardener I was, is a good thing!

Honoring Arbor Day

In 1854 J Sterling Morton moved from Detroit to the area that is now the state of Nebraska. At that time there were virtually no trees in the area and he and the other pioneers desired to have them in their surroundings. They also noticed that trees were needed to act as windbreaks to stabilize the soil and to provide shade from the sun, fuel and building materials. Morton planted many trees around his own home but wanted to encourage and enable others to do the same.

At a Nebraska State Board of Agriculture meeting on January 4, 1872, he proposed a holiday to plant trees on April 10, 1872. This was known as "Arbor Day" and prizes were awarded to the counties and individuals who planted the most trees on the day. A total of about one million trees were planted in Nebraska on the first Arbor Day. In 1874, Governor Robert W Furnas officially proclaimed that Arbor Day would be observed on April 10, 1884. In 1885, it became a legal holiday and was moved to April 22, which was Morton's birthday. In 1989 the official state holiday was moved to the last Friday in April.

Pictured here is one of three Canadian chokecherry trees we planted only a few years ago as saplings. Today they tower over our back yard fence. In full bloom as they are today, their aroma is simply heavenly ... similar to a lilac in the smell department.

Sitting in our kitchen with the window open yesterday, our eyes lit up at the same moment as the perfumed scent wafted in!

Please plant a tree, save a tree or just enjoy the ones surrounding you. They are life~giving!

How are Yo~Yo Hearts like Snowflakes?

Another farmgirl swap and 54 yo~yo hearts later I'm seeing them in my sleep! They were fun to sewup, each one being different. They will go off in the mail tomorrow and I will get 54 back ... each one being different.

No two are alike

I think I'll sew them all together in one long string for a garland over my bedroom's window valance.

Garden Expo

This is the third or fourth year I've been to the Spokane Valley Garden Expo at the Community College. Can't believe how its grown. Brought my camera to take pictures of the lovely flowers, plants and garden art but there were so many people it was impossible! Not only was picture~taking difficult ... even getting closeup looks at the garden offerings overwhelmed me so much so that I left empty~handed.

Head spinning and just as I was leaving, I saw this lovely creature. I parted the crowd just long enough to capture her in my lens.

It's All About Fairies

Can't tell you how much fun I had with my farmgirl mail art project for May!

Since discovering all the yummy papers, sticky~back jewels and pearls and the lovely border print of fairies from my bff, whole new areas of creativity have opened up for me.

My new friend Peggy taught me the fine art of hand sewing heart yo~yos with button embellishments and now I'm hooked on making them.

Found this sweet fairy poem on the net ... how appropo!

and just to add a little more dimension, I cut this butterfly from a special paper, spread his wings and landed him in the corner of my card.

Mother's Day in Beloved Art

Mary Cassatt is one of my all~time favorite artists. She called herself an "Independent" rather than an "Impressionist" as the artists of her day classified themselves. Here are a few of her mother and child studies:

Young Mother Sewing ~ 1902

This is a beautiful picture of mother working, ignoring the painter, child leaning on mother's knee, staring right into the precamera camera, and, that rarest of things with Mary Cassat, a smidgeon of landscape seen through the expansive windows.

Maternal Caress ~ 1891

Classical color printing of most kinds employs one plate for each color. By exercising great care in her placement of color, Cassatt could print two colors, perhaps occasionally more, from a single plate. The drypoint, so called because it produces lines in an etching with no use of acid, Cassatt used for that purpose, sometimes apparently drawing directly on the copper plate with the drypoint with no preliminary drawing on paper ~ an extraordinary feat.

Mother's Kiss ~ 1891

It is a defensible position that Mary Cassatt was the greatest artist of mothers and children since Raphael. Both artists achieved greatness by rigorously avoiding the sentimentality that made their subjects so easy of popular acclaim and so treacherous for the serious artist.

Baby's First Caress ~ 1891

There is a nice easy symmetry in the gestures of mother and child. The baby boy reaches up to his mother's chin, cupping it in his tiny hand, while she reaches down and does precisely the same thing with his left foot.

A major theme for Mary Cassatt's work was that of a mother and child. It was a theme to which she would return again and again, for it expressed very clearly her own view of the highest achievement a woman could attain, and one which she profoundly regretted never having attained herself.

My Dad flooded the field that was right across the road from our little house so that I could have a skating party. He had just been called up to serve in Germany and France during the 2nd World War, so this card has a special meaning for me.

Happy Birthday to Me!

While going through my childhood album for photos to use in a family tree album I'm putting together, I found these old birthday cards. I never really looked at them or appreciated them over the years, but now I see what darling graphics from the early 40s they possess.

I don't remember these birthdays as I was just 3 and 4 years old. Being the oldest child in my family, my Mother kept a wonderful photo album for me starting at birth and going right up through high school graduation.
